Strategic importance to BRICS, by country: China

China has the largest economy in the BRICS grouping. For this reason China is often identified as synonymous with BRICS, rather than a part of BRICS. China’s economic power enables it to make some of the largest contributions to global south development through its Belt & Road initiative (BRI), and providing the most towards funding the New Development Bank to build a fund that benefits BRICS countries and others. China has quickly become one of the biggest trading partners, particularly of countries in the global south. It surpasses the US and the UK in many countries in the global south signalling its growing influence. It also enhances its investment through initiatives such as the BRI. As a leading voice in technology with the cost efficient innovation of bringing expensive technologies to the global south at affordable prices. It thrives in areas like 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital finance. China is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strengthening the ability of BRICS in a multipolar world order.

China’s fundamental basis for being in BRICS is based on the principle of multipolarity. This belief that a few powerful individuals cannot be left unquestioned with hegemonic power. China’s strong sense of culture, morales, and a firm belief in a shared humanity means that it is in an ideal position to bring many together not on their differences, but focusing on their similarities. This drives China to push and support BRICS and its institutions, spearheading the facilitation of a new world order. Its economic capability gives it the global presence and recognition for its coz while offering respect for a new cause that has no access to funds hegemon influenced institutions have been benefiting from for years.

“…International rules must be written and upheld jointly by all countries based on the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter, rather than dictated by those with the strongest muscles or the loudest voice. Ganging up to form exclusive groups and packaging their own rules as international norms are even more unacceptable…” (Xinhua, 15th BRICS Summit)
